Following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, the US calls for India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and pursue dialogue. Regional powers urge restraint
Following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, the United States has urged India and Pakistan to engage in dialogue and work toward de-escalating tensions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed condolences and reaffirmed cooperation with India against terrorism in a conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Rubio also spoke with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stressing the need to condemn the attack and calling for joint efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
The US State Department emphasized the importance of direct communication and peaceful resolution in South Asia. Jaishankar, in a post on social media platform X, reiterated that the perpetrators, backers, and planners of the attack must face justice. Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information, Attaullah Tarar, alleged that India may initiate military action within 24–36 hours, citing “credible intelligence.”
Meanwhile, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait have expressed concern over the rising tensions and called for restraint and diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
