Iran Says Draft Not Final After Trump Peace Claim

Date: Jun 12, 2026 | Source: Fela News

US President Donald Trump has claimed that he cancelled planned military strikes on Iran after what he described as approval of a draft peace agreement by Iranian leadership. He said the proposed deal includes extending the ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and beginning 60 days of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, said he believed Iran’s Supreme Leader had agreed to the proposal and suggested that the final agreement could be signed soon. He also said the arrangements involved several countries, including regional powers in the Middle East, and that US forces would continue monitoring the Strait of Hormuz until a final deal is reached.

However, Iran has denied that any agreement has been finalised. According to the semi-official Fars news agency, Tehran has not approved any draft text with the United States, though it has indicated it may consider future proposals. Another Iranian outlet, Tasnim News Agency, also dismissed Trump’s claims, saying similar statements had been made in the past without results.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that discussions are still ongoing and no final decision has been taken. He added that while parts of the text were discussed, differences remain, especially over sanctions, nuclear restrictions and frozen assets.

Reports suggest that behind-the-scenes negotiations continued recently with mediation efforts from regional actors, including Qatar. Talks reportedly focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, releasing Iranian assets and defining the framework for nuclear negotiations during a temporary ceasefire period.

Despite claims from the US president, Iranian officials have maintained that no final memorandum of understanding has been signed, and discussions are still at a preliminary stage.
