Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday held separate phone conversations with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, strongly condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, most of them tourists.

These discussions coincided with Pakistan’s claim of having “credible intelligence” suggesting that India may carry out military action within 24 to 36 hours. Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar alleged on X that India was planning such action based on “fabricated accusations” linked to the Pahalgam attack.

Sharif, in his post on X, said he urged Guterres to initiate a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident. He reiterated Pakistan’s rejection of India’s allegations, condemned terrorism in all forms, and emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to peace while asserting its right to defend its sovereignty.

Jaishankar, in his post, said he appreciated Guterres’ clear condemnation of the attack and emphasized the need for justice and accountability. Guterres expressed concern over growing India-Pakistan tensions and offered his good offices to help de-escalate the situation, warning against potential tragic consequences.
