Power was nearly fully restored across Spain by early Tuesday morning, though questions remained about the cause of one of Europe’s most severe blackouts. The outage had grounded flights, paralyzed metro systems, disrupted mobile networks and shut down ATMs in Spain and Portugal.
By 6:30 a.m., Spain’s electricity operator Red Eléctrica reported that over 99% of the energy demand had been restored. Power gradually returned to various regions in both Spain and Portugal, following the widespread blackout that stranded travelers at airports and train stations. By Monday night, Portugal's grid operator REN confirmed that 85 of 89 power substations were back online.
On Monday night, many people, including those in Madrid, spent the night in total darkness. Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Cathedral was barely visible against the night sky. Streets were eerily empty as citizens stayed indoors after a day of disruptions. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reassured the public, stating efforts were underway to restore power nationwide.
By Tuesday morning, Madrid's metro system resumed service on most lines, with 80% of trains expected to run during rush hour. Emergency workers had rescued around 35,000 passengers stranded by the blackout.
