Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after federal funding was frozen over its refusal to curb campus activism and implement
Harvard University on Monday, 21 April 2025, announced that it was suing the Donald Trump administration to halt a freeze on more than USD 2.2 billion in grants after the institution said it would defy the Trump administration’s demand to limit activism on campus.
In a letter to Harvard earlier this month, the Trump administration had called for broad leadership reforms at the University and also called for some changes to its admission policies. Harvard President Alan Garber said the university would not bend to the government’s demands. Hours later, the government froze billions of dollars in federal funding.
The row between the White House and Harvard further escalated when the latter refused to accept far reaching policy changes and Trump threatened to strip it off its tax exempt status.
The original demands, issued in early April, include eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices, working with immigration authorities to vet international students, and making extensive changes to hiring practices, admissions processes, and the university’s internal administration.
