Punjab DIG arrested Rs 5 crore and valuables seized.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made a dramatic move in Punjab’s law enforcement corridor by arresting Harcharan Singh Bhullar, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Ropar Range, on bribery allegations. He was apprehended along with a middleman at his office in Mohali, following a complaint by an iron merchant who claimed Bhullar demanded Rs 8 lakh to “settle” an FIR.
During raids across his office, residence, and linked properties, the CBI unearthed a staggering haul: about Rs 5 crore in cash, 22 luxury watches, 1.5 kg of jewellery, keys for Audi and Mercedes cars, and documents related to multiple properties. Arms, liquor, and other valuable items were also found during the search.
Investigators said the case started after a complaint led to a planned trap. In a “controlled call,” Bhullar allegedly confirmed receipt of the bribe and directed further steps through his associate. The middleman was caught red-handed during the handover in Chandigarh’s Sector 21.
Bhullar, a 2009 batch IPS officer, had taken over as Ropar DIG in November 2024. Before this, he served as DIG Patiala Range and held several other senior positions. His father is a former Punjab DGP, which makes the case even more high-profile.
The discovery of huge unexplained wealth raises serious concerns about corruption and misuse of power within the police system. CBI officials are now investigating how such a large amount of unaccounted money and luxury goods were amassed. Both Bhullar and his aide are expected to be produced in court soon, as the inquiry continues to widen.
