In a sharp political salvo, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being “frightened” of Donald Trump following the former U.S. President’s bold claim that India had assured America it would halt purchases of Russian oil. The allegation forms part of a pointed five point attack outlining what Gandhi contends are failures in India’s foreign and energy policies.

Gandhi’s critique stems from Trump’s statement that Modi “assured” him India would stop importing Russian oil a claim New Delhi has not confirmed. Reacting sharply, Gandhi accused Modi of allowing the U.S. President to dictate Indian policy instead of defending national interests.

In his 5-point charge, Gandhi noted that Modi (1) permitted Trump to voice India’s energy commitment unilaterally, (2) continues to send congratulatory messages despite perceived slights, (3) canceled key diplomatic or ministerial visits, (4) skipped attendance at the Gaza peace summit, and (5) remained silent on controversial operations like “Operation Sindoor.”

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi said, “PM Modi is frightened of Trump” and questioned why the prime minister did not publicly correct or challenge Trump’s claim. He further criticized Modi’s pattern of diplomatic deference

The opposition’s argument resonates amid India’s delicate balancing act in world diplomacy especially as the country navigates sanctions, global pressure, and shifting alliances in a volatile energy market. Critics argue that Modi’s apparent lack of response undermines India’s autonomy in foreign affairs.

BJP and government defenders are expected to counter that responsibility for foreign statements lies with executive diplomacy, not public rebuttal. They might stress that no formal commitment was made and that energy strategy remains guided by national interest. Gandhi’s attack, however, is sure to escalate rhetorical tensions in the weeks leading into high stakes political debates.
