In a surprising but strategic announcement, Prashant Kishor, leader and founder of Jan Suraaj Party, declared that he will not contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Instead of entering the poll fray personally, Kishor said he would devote his energy to bolstering his party’s grassroots structure and ensuring it makes a lasting impact in the state.

Kishor’s decision is being read by political watchers as a move to preserve his strength as a strategist rather than exposing himself as a candidate. According to reports, he and his team felt contesting would distract from more urgent organizational work. He emphasized that this decision was made collectively“the party has decided that I should not contest” suggesting internal consensus around the move.

Still, Kishor hasn’t ruled out bold electoral ambitions for his party. He stated that a tally below 150 seats would be considered disappointing, while achieving that threshold would signal a breakout performance. He also announced that Jan Suraaj would field a candidate in Raghopur, traditionally associated with Tejashwi Yadav, to make its presence felt in elite political battlegrounds.

Kishor was forthright in his criticism of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He described it as engulfed in “complete chaos,” with uncertainty over which party in the alliance would contest which seats. He further predicted that Nitish Kumar would not return as Chief Minister if the NDA were to win, and asserted that the alliance is on its way out.

This announcement comes just weeks before the Bihar elections scheduled for November 6 and 11, 2025, with counting on November 14. The evolving dynamics, especially Kishor’s decision to stay out of direct contesting, could realign suspense and voter expectations in the electoral theater.
