The White House has listed India among nations it considers "unfair" for imposing high tariffs on American goods, particularly highlighting a 100% tariff on U.S. agricultural products. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized countries like India, Japan, and the European Union for imposing heavy tariffs, which she claimed harmed U.S. exporters. She pointed out that tariffs such as 50% on American dairy from the EU, 700% on American rice from Japan, and 300% on butter and cheese from Canada have made it nearly impossible for U.S. goods to reach key markets.
Leavitt emphasized that the U.S. will impose reciprocal tariffs starting April 2, ensuring that tariffs charged by other countries are met with equal measures. Leavitt stated that President Trump’s team has already prepared a plan for these changes, which will be a significant shift in U.S. trade policy. Trump had previously called the current tariffs "temporary" and indicated the new measures would be a "game-changer," focused on fair treatment and reciprocity in trade.
