Preparations for the conclave to elect a new pope ramp up with the installation of the Sistine Chapel chimney. As cardinals gather, discussions focus on church
Medications for the forthcoming conclave to handpick a new pope boosted on Friday with the installation of the chimney stack atop the Sistine Tabernacle, motioning the launch of the process. Vatican firefighters were seen installing the chimney stack, an important step for the May 7 conclave. After each two rounds of voting, the ballots are burned to advertise the outgrowth. Black bank signals no pope, while white bank indicates a winner.
The white bank surfaced on March 13, 2013, after the fifth ballot, publicizing Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis. Francis, the first Latin American pope, passed away on April 21 at age 88.
As cardinals arrived in Vatican City for the conclave, it was noted that Pope Francis had appointed two nuns to lead crucial Vatican services, pressing his belief in adding women's part in church governance. still, some aged cardinals, like Cardinal Beniamino Stella, opposed Francis' reforms, which allowed women and lay people to head Vatican services rather of church.
Pre-conclave conversations have centered on the unborn direction of the church and the rates demanded in the new pope. Some conservative cardinals hope for a figure who can restore traditional training and bring stability to the Vatican bureaucracy, following review of Francis' leadership.
