The US government shares new details on its crackdown on international students, restoring their legal status amid mounting court challenges. The policy outline
The US government has started revealing details about its crackdown on international students, explaining how it targeted thousands and outlined reasons for terminating their legal status. These revelations came through lawsuits filed by students whose status was abruptly canceled in recent weeks with little explanation.
Over the past month, foreign students across the US were shocked to discover their records had been removed from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s student database. Some students went into hiding out of fear of being detained by immigration authorities, while others abandoned their studies and returned home.
After facing mounting legal challenges, federal officials announced on Friday that they would restore the legal status of international students while establishing guidelines for future status terminations. In a court filing on Monday, they shared the new policy, which includes a document issued over the weekend outlining the various reasons students' status can be canceled, such as the revocation of the visas they used to enter the US.
