US Embassy Warns Against Visa Abuse Amid Indian Student Deportation Incident

Amid rising concern over the treatment of Indian students at US airports, the US Embassy in India issued a strong statement following the deportation and handcuffing of an Indian student at Newark Airport. The Embassy clarified that while the US continues to welcome genuine travelers, illegal entry, visa misuse, or violations of American laws will not be tolerated. “There is no right to visit the United States,” it stated on X, reinforcing that entry is a privilege, not an entitlement.

The controversy emerged after a video shared on social media by an NRI went viral, showing a young Indian student being deported while in handcuffs. According to Kunal Jain, a social entrepreneur who witnessed the incident, the student—speaking in Haryanvi—was visibly distressed and claimed he was not insane, though he was allegedly being misrepresented by officials. Jain further alleged that such cases have become increasingly frequent, with 3–4 students reportedly being turned back daily due to their inability to clearly explain their purpose of travel.

Responding to the incident, the Consulate General of India in New York acknowledged the issue via social media and confirmed that it is in touch with local authorities to look into the matter. The consulate reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare of Indian nationals. This event comes amid heightened US scrutiny of international students, with several facing deportation due to varied reasons ranging from immigration miscommunications to political protests and minor legal infractions. The incident has triggered widespread debate over student safety, visa policies, and the diplomatic responsibilities of both countries in protecting the interests of young travelers.
