On Sunday, the U.S. announced that it had reached a trade agreement with China following two days of negotiations facilitated by the Swiss government in Geneva. While the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, the talks marked a significant step in easing tensions in U.S.-China trade relations. Ahead of the discussions, President Trump suggested he was open to reducing tariffs on China from the current 145% to 80%.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed gratitude to the Swiss government for hosting the talks, calling the discussions productive. He also mentioned that he had kept President Trump informed throughout the process.
Ambassador Jamieson Greer also spoke about the constructive nature of the negotiations, noting that the rapid progress made during the weekend suggested the differences between the two sides might not have been as large as previously thought. Greer emphasized that the U.S. trade deficit of $1.2 trillion had led to the imposition of tariffs as part of the national emergency declared by President Trump. He expressed confidence that the agreement reached with China would help address the issue.
