Following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has requested an emergency UNSC session on May 5. India responds with strong diplomatic and trade measures
Under mounting international pressure following the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 dead, Pakistan has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss escalating tensions with India. The UNSC is set to hold closed-door consultations on May 5, with Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, scheduled to speak publicly after the meeting.
In a statement, Pakistan's mission to the UN cited rising regional tensions, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, as a serious threat to peace and security, justifying its request for the emergency session. The move follows the UNSC's April 23 condemnation of the Pahalgam attack, where members expressed condolences to India and Nepal, emphasized the global threat of terrorism, and called for accountability for the perpetrators.
India, in response to the attack, has taken several strong measures against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, expelling Pakistani High Commission officials, halting visas under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, and suspending all visa services for Pakistani nationals. Additionally, India has imposed a complete ban on the import and transit of goods from Pakistan, citing national security concerns in a government notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
