The UK government and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation on AI safety research and potentially investing in the UK's AI infrastructure, including data centres, officials announced on Monday. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized AI's transformative role in addressing national challenges from improving the NHS to boosting economic growth. He noted that such progress is only possible with the involvement of leading firms like OpenAI.

As part of its AI strategy, the government plans to invest £1 billion in computing infrastructure to expand public computing capacity by 20 times over the next five years. With global competition intensifying led by the US, China, and India Europe is under pressure to accelerate its AI efforts. OpenAI may expand its London presence and collaborate on AI applications in sectors like justice, defence, security, and education. CEO Sam Altman commended the UK’s proactive stance through its "AI Opportunities Action Plan," led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Labour government sees AI as a key driver for productivity growth, estimating a potential 1.5% annual boost worth £47 billion over a decade.
