In Recent Weeks, Powerful Earthquakes Have Shaken Several Parts of the World
In recent weeks, several countries around the world have experienced strong earthquakes, causing the earth to shake repeatedly. The most recent and powerful tremor was felt in Russia, where a massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck under the sea. Its impact was so intense that tsunami waves reached Japan. Tsunami alerts have been issued for Russia, Japan, Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake originated deep beneath the ocean floor.
On July 30, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 was recorded in Russia’s Kamchatka region at 5:39 AM. Just minutes later, another 6.3-magnitude quake struck the nearby Vilyuchinsk area. On the same day, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit south of Fiji Island at 11:23 PM. Just before that, on July 29, tremors were also felt in India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Tasmania, Australia, with magnitudes of 6.2.
In India, on July 22, mild tremors were felt in the Kutch region of Gujarat. Although the magnitude was just 3.6, the disaster management department remains on alert. Earlier, on July 20, Russia experienced three consecutive earthquakes — first 5.0, then 6.7, and finally 7.4 in magnitude — prompting the USGS to issue a tsunami warning.
On July 25, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Wallis and Futuna, with its epicenter located 324 kilometers deep in the ocean. Prior to that, on June 13, Russia’s Kuril Islands, located near Japan, recorded 6.5-magnitude tremors. This area is prone to frequent seismic activity.
On March 28, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, with its epicenter in Myanmar. Several buildings in Bangkok shook, and an under-construction building collapsed. On the same day, another 7.7-magnitude quake hit Myanmar, causing massive destruction. At least 1,644 people died, and more than 3,400 were injured. Tremors were felt in India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh.
On April 23, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul, Türkiye (formerly Turkey), with its epicenter located in the Sea of Marmara, about 10 kilometers below the surface.
All these incidents clearly indicate a significant rise in global seismic activity in recent months. In many regions, the threat of tsunamis has accompanied the earthquakes. Scientists and disaster management agencies are closely monitoring these activities to issue timely warnings and minimize the loss of life and property.
