Donald Trump launches a $5 million 'gold card' offering green-card privileges to wealthy foreigners. The program aims to boost the U.S. economy and replace the
On Friday, former U.S. President Donald Trump introduced a new $5 million “gold card,” claiming it would be available within two weeks. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said he would personally buy the first card, calling it “the Trump card.”
The gold card, first announced on February 25, is designed to replace the EB-5 visa program, which has been in place since 1990. Unlike the EB-5 visa — which requires a $1 million investment (or $800,000 in certain areas) and the creation of 10 jobs — the gold card offers “green-card privileges-plus” to wealthy foreign nationals.
According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, up to 1,000 gold cards were sold in a single day, and over 37 million people worldwide are eligible. The Trump administration projects the card could generate $1 trillion if 200,000 are sold.
The aim is to attract affluent investors who can boost the U.S. economy through job creation and taxes. Trump officials argue that this streamlined program will outperform the EB-5, which has faced criticism for inefficiency and fraud.
