President Donald Trump has openly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin amid escalating Russian airstrikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, describing the Russian leader as having “gone absolutely CRAZY.” In a social media post on Sunday night, May 25, 2025, Trump expressed frustration with the ongoing conflict and accused Putin of “needlessly killing a lot of people” by launching missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian officials reported this as the most intense aerial assault since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, with at least 12 dead and dozens injured.
Trump warned that any attempt by Putin to take over all of Ukraine would spell disaster for Russia. However, he also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing him of making inflammatory remarks that hinder peace efforts. “Everything out of his mouth causes problems,” Trump said.
Having long touted a friendly relationship with Putin, Trump expressed confusion over the Russian leader’s recent actions. Speaking to reporters in New Jersey earlier in the day, he said, “I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin.”
Although Trump recently urged Putin to halt the attacks and announced upcoming ceasefire talks following a phone call between the two leaders, the Kremlin denied that any direct negotiations were scheduled. Meanwhile, the European Union has imposed fresh sanctions on Russia. Trump, while threatening further action, has not yet implemented new measures.
