President Trump descendants travel ban on 12 countries, citing national security risks, with limited exceptions for visa holders and residents.
Former US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation banning travel from 12 countries, citing serious national security concerns. The countries facing a full travel ban include Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and others that the US government believes pose high risks due to inadequate screening and vetting systems.
According to the White House, this decision was made to protect Americans from threats and uphold public safety. In addition to the complete ban, seven other countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Laos will face partial restrictions. While announcing the proclamation, Trump said the US cannot accept open migration from nations where people cannot be safely or reliably screened.
Despite the restrictions, there are limited exceptions. Lawful permanent residents, individuals with valid visas, and people whose entry aligns with US national interests will still be allowed in under certain conditions. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said the president is keeping his promise to shield the country from potentially dangerous foreign actors.
This isn't the first time Trump has introduced such a policy. A similar travel ban was enforced in 2017 and targeted several Muslim-majority countries. That policy later expanded to include more nations. The latest travel ban continues along the same lines but with broader country coverage and tailored exceptions.
