President Trump signs bipartisan ‘Take It Down Act’ into law, criminalizing non-consensual sharing of intimate images and deepfakes. Melania Trump played a key
On Monday, May 20, 2025, President Donald Trump, joined by First Lady Melania Trump, signed the ‘Take It Down Act’ into law—a federal measure targeting the distribution of non-consensual intimate images, commonly known as revenge porn. Melania Trump played a significant role in advancing the legislation, making her first public appearance since returning as First Lady in March to advocate for its passage in the House, after it cleared the Senate.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt credited the First Lady’s efforts as “instrumental” in securing the bill’s bipartisan support. The law criminalizes the intentional publication or threats to publish intimate images without consent, including AI-generated deepfakes. It also requires websites and social media platforms to remove such content within 48 hours of a victim’s request and take steps to prevent reposts.
Though many states already have revenge porn laws, this act marks a rare instance of federal regulation over online platforms. Sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar, the bill passed the House 409-2 and was approved unanimously in the Senate.
Digital rights groups have criticized the law as overly broad, warning it may enable censorship and infringe on due process. Melania Trump, continuing her Be Best initiative, called the bipartisan support a strong message of protecting children's dignity and safety. President Trump praised the bill, joking it could benefit him personally due to his online treatment.
