On Thursday, May 15, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a series of major agreements with the United Arab Emirates aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, including deals worth over $200 billion and a new partnership focused on artificial intelligence. Following his meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the White House confirmed that one of the highlights was a $14.5 billion investment by Etihad Airways to purchase 28 Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft, which will be powered by GE Aerospace engines.

Neither Etihad, Boeing, nor GE immediately commented on the announcement. However, the White House emphasized that the inclusion of Boeing’s next-generation 777X in Etihad’s fleet marks a significant expansion of U.S.-UAE commercial aviation ties, contributing to American manufacturing and boosting exports.

In addition to aviation deals, the U.S. Commerce Department revealed the formation of a “U.S.-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership.” The announcement was made as President Trump and Sheikh Mohamed inaugurated a new 5-gigawatt AI campus in the UAE—the largest of its kind outside the U.S.

This breakthrough is a significant achievement for the UAE, which has been striving to enhance its global standing in AI while balancing relations between the U.S. and China, its top trading partner. The agreement includes the UAE’s pledge to invest in U.S.-based data centers equivalent in size and capability to those in the UAE. It also features a commitment to align the UAE’s national security regulations with those of the U.S., ensuring stricter controls on U.S. technology to prevent unauthorized transfers.
