US President Donald Trump stated that trade negotiations with India are progressing well and that a deal is expected soon. His comments follow remarks from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who also suggested that the US and India were close to finalizing a trade agreement.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said, "India trade talks are going great. I think we’ll have a deal with India." He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in February, noting, "They want to make a deal."

Bessent further highlighted progress made during the recent meeting between US Vice President JD Vance and PM Modi in Delhi, adding, "I expect some announcements regarding India soon… A country like India, with its posted tariffs, is easier to negotiate with."

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, without naming India specifically, mentioned that the US had reached an agreement with a foreign country to ease "reciprocal" tariffs Trump had planned to impose. In April, Trump announced reciprocal tariffs for all trading partners, including 26% on Indian goods, while China faced tariffs of up to 245%. Despite this, India refrained from retaliating, while other countries, including China, responded with tariffs of their own.
