While Trump struck a hopeful tone, the Omani mediator—facilitating the discussions in Rome—was more reserved, stating on Friday, May 23, that the fifth round of negotiations had yielded “some but not conclusive” progress. Despite this, Trump said, “I think we could have some good news on the Iran front,” without confirming the nature of any potential deal.

U.S. representatives at the Rome talks, held at the Omani Embassy, included Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Michael Anton, Director of Policy Planning at the State Department.
