Trump Calls India
A day after imposing a 25% tariff on Indian imports, along with an unspecified “penalty” for India’s defence and energy ties with Russia, U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric, calling both India and Russia “dead economies.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, *“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”*
He further criticized India’s trade policies, saying the U.S. has limited business with the country due to its extremely high tariffs, which he described as “among the highest in the world.”
Trump also took aim at former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, issuing a warning in his post: “Watch your words. You’re entering very dangerous territory!”
This sharp exchange came in response to Medvedev’s earlier remarks on July 28, posted on X (formerly Twitter), where he cautioned Trump against making threats towards Russia. Medvedev wrote: *“Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember two things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war—not with Ukraine, but within his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”*
The exchange underscores rising tensions amid Trump’s increasingly aggressive stance on trade and foreign policy, particularly concerning India’s continued cooperation with Russia in the energy and defence sectors.
