A sweeping crackdown on international students under the Trump administration is alarming U.S. college officials, who accuse the government of using vague and sudden tactics to revoke visas.

Many students have been ordered to leave the country without clear explanations, a break from previous policies that allowed them to complete their studies. Some were targeted over pro-Palestinian activism or minor infractions, while others had no clear ties to political activity. Universities such as Minnesota State, Arizona State, Cornell, and Texas have reported cases of revoked visas and terminated student statuses. Federal agencies are bypassing institutions and removing students’ legal status through direct database changes.

Critics argue the move could harm America’s appeal as a top destination for higher education. Students from the Middle East, China, and India are among those affected. University leaders and advocacy groups fear the crackdown could discourage future international enrollment and damage global academic exchange. Many students, confused and afraid, are now scrambling to leave or continue their studies remotely from their home countries.
