US President Donald Trump on Friday commented that there has always been tension between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that the two nations would resolve their issues. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, "They’ve had that fight for a thousand years in Kashmir," and added, "There’s been tensions on that border for 1,500 years. They'll figure it out one way or another."
Although Trump did not confirm if he would personally intervene, he noted that he has close ties with both countries and knows their leaders well.
Tensions escalated earlier this week after unidentified gunmen killed 26 people — including 25 Indian tourists and one local — in Indian-administered Kashmir. New Delhi labeled it a "terror attack" with "cross-border" involvement, blaming Pakistan for supporting the attackers. Islamabad denied any role, expressed concern, and offered condolences to the victims' families.
In response, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a 1960 water-sharing agreement mediated by the World Bank. Pakistan strongly objected, warning that any attempt to alter river flows would be seen as an "act of war." Additionally, both nations suspended visa services, expelled military advisors, and Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian airlines.
