Trump responded to India’s claim that the US also imports Russian uranium and fertilizers by saying he “doesn’t know anything” about such imports, highlighting
US President Donald Trump was pressed on India’s accusation that the United States is hypocritically importing Russian uranium, fertilisers, and chemicals, even as he criticises India for importing Russian oil. His reply was surprising: “I don’t know anything about it.” He explicitly stated he had no knowledge of American imports of those Russian goods, despite India publicly highlighting this perceived double standard in trade policy. India’s claim centres around a broader critique of U.S. trade hypocrisy. While Washington threatens tariffs on Indian oil imports, Indian officials pointed out that the U.S. continues to import essential Russian commodities, including uranium used in nuclear fuel and fertilisers vital for agriculture.
Trump’s dismissal to the question underscores the escalating trade war dynamics. India views its oil purchases from Russia as necessary for energy security, and views U.S. criticism as unfair. In response, Indian spokespersons emphasised that the United States and European Union also engage in similar Russian trade, highlighting perceived inconsistency. This diplomatic exchange reflects increasing friction. With the U.S. having already imposed 25% tariffs on Indian imports as of August 7 2025, and threatening further action, India has pushed back firmly. The Ministry of External Affairs called the U.S. position unjust and unreasonable, while defending its own energy strategy as independent and sovereign.
When asked about U.S. imports of Russian uranium and fertilisers, Trump’s answer was simply that he “doesn’t know anything about it.” Meanwhile, India continues to draw attention to what it sees as double standards in global trade policy.
