South Korea's acting president Han Duck-soo resigns to likely run in the June 3 election, aiming to lead conservatives amid political turmoil following Yoon Suk
South Korea’s acting President Han Duck-soo announced his resignation on Thursday, stating he is stepping down to shoulder a "heavier responsibility," amid widespread speculation that he will enter the upcoming presidential race. Han is seen as a leading conservative contender, and local media reports say he will formally launch his campaign on Friday.
“I stand at a crossroads—either continue fulfilling my current duties or take on an even greater responsibility,” Han said. “I’ve decided to resign in order to do what I believe is necessary to help the country through these challenging times.”
Han became prime minister—the nation's second-highest office—under former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon’s ousting led to the upcoming by-election scheduled for June 3.
The conservative People Power Party remains unsettled following Yoon’s imposition of martial law in December. Analysts expect Han to align with the party to mount a united conservative challenge against liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung.
A veteran bureaucrat with 40 years in public service and a Harvard PhD in economics, Han has served under both liberal and conservative administrations. His critics cite his age, lack of electoral experience, and limited political clout as potential weaknesses. Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok will serve as acting president until the election.
