Russian troops have seized four border villages in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, a local official confirmed on Tuesday (May 27, 2025). This development comes shortly after President Vladimir Putin announced his directive to establish a buffer zone along the border.

The pace of Russia’s recent bombing campaign has decreased, following a dramatic escalation in the preceding days. Overnight, significantly fewer Russian drones were launched at Ukrainian towns and cities.

Despite ongoing U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and resume peace talks, Russia’s invasion shows no signs of abating. Earlier this month, Russian and Ukrainian delegations held their first direct meeting in three years in Turkey. However, aside from a major prisoner swap, the talks yielded little progress.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched roughly 900 drones between Friday and Sunday, including the war’s largest drone attack on Sunday night, involving 355 drones. From Monday to Tuesday, 60 drones were launched. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 99 Ukrainian drones across seven Russian regions overnight.

In Sumy, Russian forces are pushing further inland following their capture of villages, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the regional military administration. He noted that civilians had been evacuated in advance and are not currently in danger.

Last week, Putin visited the Kursk region, which Russia claims to have cleared of Ukrainian forces — a claim Kyiv disputes. Putin reiterated the need for a “security buffer zone” to secure the vulnerable border, though specifics remain unclear. He previously announced a similar aim in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region to protect Russia’s Belgorod area, often targeted by Ukrainian attacks.
