Russian forces have reportedly driven Ukrainian troops out of one of their last strongholds in the Kursk region, capturing the border village of Oleshnya, according to the Russian Defence Ministry. The ministry stated that the “North” military group secured the village during ongoing offensive operations. Ukrainian authorities have not yet responded, and the claim remains unverified by independent sources.
Russian state media TASS noted continued fighting in the village of Gornal, about 11 kilometers south of Oleshnya, suggesting Ukrainian forces still maintain a presence there.
The development marks a significant shift in the region, which Ukrainian troops had briefly infiltrated last year. Analysts say Russia, with North Korean support, has largely reclaimed the area, limiting Ukraine’s strategic leverage.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 33 out of 87 drones launched by Russia overnight, with another 36 neutralized by electronic jamming. Russian attacks caused damage to farms in Odesa and fires in the Sumy region. Russia also claimed to have downed two Ukrainian drones overnight.
