A recent disclosure in the Lok Sabha has revealed that the government spent around Rs 762 crore on foreign visits undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi between 2015 and 2025. The amount covers expenses related to official overseas travel over a period of ten years, including security arrangements, transportation, aircraft operations and logistical support for delegations.
According to the written reply presented in Parliament, the spending on foreign tours has changed from year to year depending on the number of visits, distance travelled and size of the delegation. International travel was limited during 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, which resulted in lower expenditure that year. However, as global engagements resumed, expenses gradually increased again in the following years.
Officials clarified that during such visits, the Prime Minister is treated as a guest of the host nation. This means that hospitality costs are generally borne by the receiving country. The reported figures mainly reflect India’s internal expenses such as travel costs of the official delegation, security teams, logistics staff and media personnel accompanying the Prime Minister.
The yearly data shows that spending crossed Rs 100 crore in 2024 and reached its highest level in 2025, when multiple high level diplomatic tours were undertaken. These visits included participation in major global summits and bilateral meetings with world leaders across Europe, North America, Asia and other regions. Such tours are often aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties, boosting trade partnerships and enhancing strategic cooperation.
The size of the delegation has also varied depending on the importance and scope of each visit. While most tours included teams ranging from a few dozen officials, one itinerary in 2025 involved a much larger delegation spread across multiple countries.
Supporters argue that these visits are essential for maintaining India’s global presence and promoting national interests abroad. Others believe there should be detailed transparency regarding public expenditure on foreign travel.
Overall, the data highlights how international diplomacy has become a significant part of national leadership responsibilities, requiring both strategic planning and careful financial management.
