Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the western Kursk region on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), marking his first trip there since Russian forces expelled Ukrainian troops from the area last month. According to the Kremlin, Putin met with local volunteer organizations and toured the Kursk-II nuclear power plant during the visit. State television broadcast footage of Putin interacting with volunteers and regional officials, including acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein. He was joined by Sergei Kiriyenko, the Kremlin's First Deputy Chief of Staff.

In late April, Russia announced it had successfully driven Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region, bringing an end to what it called the largest incursion onto Russian soil since World War II. The offensive had begun on August 6, two years after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when Ukrainian troops launched a surprise cross-border assault into Kursk. Backed by Western-supplied heavy weaponry and drone swarms, Ukrainian forces managed to seize control of nearly 1,400 square kilometres at the peak of the operation.
