Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to the Maldives, reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening ties with the island nation, stating on Saturday, July 26, 2025, that India looks forward to further deepening its partnership. He met several prominent Maldivian leaders, including Vice-President Uz Hussain Mohamed.
In his discussions with Vice-President Mohamed Latheef, key areas of bilateral cooperation were reviewed. “Our countries continue to collaborate in crucial sectors such as infrastructure, technology, climate change, energy, and more. This cooperation greatly benefits our citizens. We are eager to enhance this partnership in the years ahead,” Modi shared in a post on X.
He also met Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People’s Majlis (Maldivian Parliament), where the two leaders discussed the longstanding friendship between the two nations and the strong relationship between their respective Parliaments. Modi welcomed the establishment of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis and reiterated India’s ongoing support for capacity building in the Maldives.
During his visit, Modi also met former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, whom he described as a steadfast supporter of India-Maldives ties. “We discussed the importance of the Maldives as a key pillar of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Mahasagar vision,” Modi noted. Nasheed had served as President of the Maldives from November 11, 2008, to February 7, 2012.
Reinforcing India’s development partnership, Modi assured that India would continue assisting the Maldives through capacity building and various development initiatives.
Earlier, on Friday, July 25, 2025, Modi held comprehensive talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, where he announced a ₹4,850 crore line of credit to support the island nation’s development efforts.
