Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump engaged in a significant 35-minute phone call during the G7 Summit in Canada, following Trump’s early return to the US amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. Originally scheduled to meet in person on the sidelines of the summit, the two leaders opted for a telephonic conversation after Trump’s sudden departure. The call was initiated at Trump’s request and covered a range of critical issues, including terrorism, Operation Sindoor, and the broader geopolitical situation in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared that PM Modi used the opportunity to brief President Trump in detail about Operation Sindoor, India’s recent military response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Modi emphasized that India’s strikes were precise, limited to terror targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and designed to avoid escalation. The Indian Prime Minister reiterated that India considers terrorism not just a proxy war, but a direct form of warfare. Trump expressed his understanding of India’s position and reaffirmed support for its fight against terrorism.

The two leaders also discussed ongoing global conflicts, agreeing that direct talks were essential to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war. On the Indo-Pacific front, both emphasized the importance of the QUAD alliance, with Modi inviting Trump to India for its next summit, an invitation that Trump accepted. Modi, however, declined Trump’s request to stop by the US en route from Canada due to prior commitments. The call highlighted a strong strategic alignment and reinforced Indo-US collaboration on global peace and regional stability.
