Canadian PM Mark Carney will visit President Trump amid trade disputes, declaring the era of U.S.-Canada integration over and pledging bold leadership to unite
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday. The meeting comes amid escalating tensions over Trump’s ongoing trade war and threats of annexation. Carney’s Liberal Party recently secured a dramatic election victory, seen as a public rejection of Trump’s policies and rhetoric toward Canada.
“This election was about standing up to President Trump and building a strong economy,” Carney said in his first public remarks since the vote. He also confirmed that King Charles III will address Parliament on May 27 to outline the government’s priorities, as Canada remains a member of the British Commonwealth.
Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau, has emphasized stronger ties with traditional allies like the UK and France. He declared that Canada’s era of deepening integration with the U.S. has ended. “I had a constructive call with President Trump, and we’ll meet in Washington next Tuesday,” he said, vowing to secure the best outcome for Canada.
“We face a once-in-a-lifetime crisis,” Carney said. “Now is the time to unite, be bold, and act with ambition.”
