Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister of the country for the longest time. Now PM Modi has come second in this matter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now become the second longest-serving Prime Minister of the country. He has left behind Indira Gandhi.
Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of the country for 4077 days, while Modi has held this post for 4078 days till 25 July 2025. Before this, the longest tenure was of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the Prime Minister for 16 years and 286 days.
Modi had earlier served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014 and is the longest-serving Chief Minister of the state.
The three longest-serving Prime Ministers are:
Jawaharlal Nehru – 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964
Narendra Modi – 26 May 2014 till date
Indira Gandhi – 24 January 1966 to 24 March 1977
Modi is the first prime minister born after independence to hold the post for the longest time. He is the first non-Congress leader to win three consecutive elections with an absolute majority and is also the longest-serving PM from a non-Hindi speaking state.
He took oath as Prime Minister for the third time on 9 June 2024 and his term will now last till 2029.
