Mongolia's Prime Minister, Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene, has stepped down after losing parliamentary backing in the wake of corruption allegations that sparked weeks of street protests, the country's Parliament announced on Tuesday (June 3, 2025). A draft resolution tied to a confidence vote failed to pass, which, under parliamentary rules, amounts to a resignation, according to an official statement.

"It was an honour to serve my country and people through challenging times—pandemics, wars, and economic sanctions," Oyun-Erdene said following the vote. Having held office since January 2021 and secured re-election in July 2024, he will now serve in a caretaker role until a new Prime Minister is appointed within 30 days.

This political turmoil follows weeks of protests in Ulaanbaatar, where demonstrators accused Oyun-Erdene and his family of corruption.

Oyun-Erdene has yet to respond publicly to Reuters’ inquiry about his resignation or the allegations. However, a statement on the Mongolian Parliament’s website quoted him expressing appreciation to the nation’s youth for voicing concerns about transparency and thanking citizens for their differing viewpoints. He added that he regretted how these issues had been politicized and contributed to instability.

Oyun-Erdene maintained that he had consistently worked to combat corruption but admitted to prioritizing large-scale infrastructure and resource development over addressing social and political concerns. During his tenure, he had championed 14 major development projects, including mineral processing facilities, water diversion schemes, dams, and power plants, in a bid to harness Mongolia's mineral wealth.
