North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has defended his country’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, describing it as a legitimate act of sovereignty in support of a “brother nation,” according to state-run outlet KCNA on Saturday.

“Our role in the conflict is justified and within the sovereign rights of our Republic,” Kim stated. He went on to praise North Korean soldiers who took part in the Kursk operation, calling them national heroes and symbols of honour.

Kim also warned that Pyongyang would not hesitate to use military force if the United States continues its so-called military provocations against Russia.

It wasn’t until late April that North Korea officially acknowledged sending over 10,000 troops and military equipment to support Russia—an escalation made possible through a sweeping strategic alliance signed last year between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
