Japan announces $1.063 billion aid package for Bangladesh, including development loans for economic reforms, railway upgrades, and scholarships, as interim lead
Japan will provide $1.063 billion in aid to Bangladesh, covering budget support, railway modernization, and education initiatives, officials in Dhaka announced on Friday (May 30, 2025). The funding package includes a $418 million development policy loan aimed at supporting Bangladesh’s economic reforms and climate resilience, according to a statement from interim leader Muhammad Yunus’ press office.
Additionally, $641 million will be allocated for upgrading a railway line, and Japan will offer $4.2 million in scholarships for Bangladeshi students. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus, who became interim head of Bangladesh last August following student protests that led to the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure to India.
