In a firm rebuke to U.S. pressure over its Russian oil imports, S. Jaishankar declared India’s sovereign choice: “If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.”
Just days before the United States gears up for even steeper tariffs on Indian goods, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made an unmissable statement: India will decide what it buys period. And if that’s not agreeable, the silent but resolute rebuttal is simple: “Don’t buy it”
This hard-hitting message arrives amid mounting trade tensions. The U.S. recently slapped a 25% tariff on Indian exports, citing India’s continued oil imports from Russia a move that unfairly penalizes New Delhi. Another 25% increase is scheduled to take effect from August 27, potentially taking combined duties to a staggering 50%
Jaishankar dismissed this as “unjustified and unreasonable,” pointing out the inconsistency: Europe trades far more with Russia, yet faces no similar backlash. He underscored India’s commitment to strategic autonomy, noting that energy decisions are made with national interests front and centre.
Jaishankar reaffirmed that while U.S. India trade talks continue, New Delhi won’t surrender its “red lines” particularly regarding the protection of farmers and small producers.
India's stance is clear: trade mustn't come at the cost of sovereignty. As global pressure mounts and U.S. tariffs loom, the message rings strong and unapologetic India won’t compromise its core principles for convenience.
