Israel launched a powerful airstrike early Friday on Iran’s Natanz nuclear site, escalating the ongoing conflict between the two nations. Codenamed “Operation Rising Lion,” the attack reportedly killed top Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists, including IRGC chief General Hossein Salami and physicist Dr. Fereydoon Abbasi. The Israeli government confirmed the strike aimed to disrupt Iran’s nuclear capabilities, especially its potential to develop atomic weapons. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a “decisive blow” to Tehran’s nuclear threat.
Located in Iran’s Isfahan province, Natanz is a cornerstone of the country’s uranium enrichment efforts. The facility houses thousands of centrifuges, many of which were reportedly destroyed in the strike. While Natanz includes an above-ground site, its most sensitive operations occur in a deeply buried underground facility designed to resist aerial attacks. By successfully damaging this fortified structure, Israel claims to have delayed Iran’s nuclear program by years. Eyewitnesses described intense explosions and thick plumes of smoke rising from the site.
This strike is also seen as a response to Iran’s “Ring of Fire” strategy, an effort to surround Israel with hostile proxy forces across the Middle East, from Hezbollah in Lebanon to Houthi rebels in Yemen. With this military action, Israel not only struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear ambitions but also sent a strong signal against Iran’s regional influence. As tensions rise and the possibility of further retaliation looms, global leaders are urging restraint to prevent a wider regional war.
