Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint during his visit to New Delhi on Thursday, according to state media. His remarks came a day after India claimed it had struck “terrorist camps” in Pakistan in response to a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir the previous month. Araqchi had made similar appeals for calm earlier in the week while visiting Pakistan.
“We hope India and Pakistan will avoid escalating tensions in the region,” Araqchi said. Pakistan has denied the existence of terrorist camps on its soil and condemned the Indian strikes, which it said resulted in the deaths of at least 31 civilians. Islamabad also vowed to retaliate, prompting a warning from New Delhi that any response would lead to further countermeasures, heightening fears of a broader conflict in one of the world's most volatile nuclear-armed regions.
Araqchi’s trip to India had been scheduled in advance as part of a joint economic commission between the two countries. He emphasized that the region needs stability to foster economic cooperation, expressing hope that peace would prevail.
