After deadly Israeli airstrikes, Iran launched 100 drones in retaliation. The strikes killed top military leaders, prompting Tehran to vow revenge and assert it
Tensions escalated dramatically in the Middle East as Iran retaliated with a massive drone strike after Israeli air raids killed top Iranian officials, including armed forces chief Mohammad Bagheri and Revolutionary Guards commander Gholam Ali Rashid. Iran launched approximately 100 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting Israeli territory, according to Israeli military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin. The drone offensive follows Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion,” which struck over 100 locations across Iran, including nuclear facilities and military command centers.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of “severe consequences,” calling Israel’s actions a crime that crossed all red lines. In a strongly worded statement, Iran's armed forces vowed an unlimited response, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter as legal justification for retaliation. The Iranian Foreign Ministry claimed the United States bears responsibility for enabling Israel's actions and warned of broader repercussions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also vowed revenge for the death of their chief, Hossein Salami, stating Israel would face “harsh and regrettable” consequences.
Tehran defended its pursuit of nuclear and missile technologies in light of the attack, stating that “only the language of power” is effective against Israel. Israeli intelligence had earlier claimed Iran was nearing a nuclear weapons capability, citing fortified underground enrichment facilities and growing uranium stockpiles. The attacks have caused regional instability, sparking concerns of a wider conflict and causing oil prices to surge over 12%. With global powers urging de-escalation, the region now stands at the brink of a potentially devastating war.
