Iran’s top Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, has issued a fatwa (a religious ruling) against U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He called them “enemies of God” and urged Muslims worldwide to unite and take action against them for threatening Iran’s religious leadership.

In his statement, Makarem said that anyone who threatens a religious leader (called a Marja) is considered a “mohareb,” which means someone who fights against God. Under Iranian law, such people can face death, crucifixion, amputation, or exile.

The fatwa also warned that any Muslim or Islamic country that supports these leaders would be committing a sin (haram). It urged all Muslims to make Trump and Netanyahu “regret” their actions. The fatwa added that any Muslim who faces hardship in this effort will be rewarded as a warrior for God.

This fatwa came after a 12-day war that began on June 13, when Israel bombed Iran, killing military leaders and nuclear scientists. In response, Iran launched missile attacks on Israeli cities. Later, the U.S. joined Israel in attacking Iran’s nuclear sites. Iran then fired back by bombing a U.S. base in Qatar.

What is a Fatwa?

A fatwa is a legal opinion in Islamic law given by a high-ranking Shia cleric, known as a Marja. It’s meant to guide Muslims and governments on religious duties. Fatwas can be peaceful or extreme, depending on the issue.

One of the most famous fatwas was in 1989, when Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the killing of author Salman Rushdie over his book The Satanic Verses, which many Muslims found offensive. The fatwa led to violence, including the murder of Rushdie’s Japanese translator and attacks on publishers. Rushdie has survived multiple attacks, including a 2023 stabbing in New York where he lost an eye.
