Iran is reportedly preparing to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), raising alarm over its nuclear intentions as tensions with Israel intensify. According to Iran’s foreign ministry, a bill is being drafted in parliament to facilitate the country’s exit from the international pact that aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. While Iranian leadership insists it remains opposed to the development of weapons of mass destruction, the possibility of withdrawal has sparked fears of a broader regional conflict.

President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran’s nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes, citing the longstanding religious edict by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that bans the use of nuclear weapons. However, international skepticism remains high, especially as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues to express concern over Iran's enriched uranium stockpile. Since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal following the U.S. withdrawal in 2018, Iran’s nuclear capabilities have expanded significantly, giving it the theoretical capacity to produce several nuclear bombs.

The rising geopolitical strain between Iran and Israel has added urgency to global concerns. Over the past few days, both nations have exchanged missile strikes, defying international calls for restraint and ceasefire. Israel has issued evacuation warnings to civilians near suspected Iranian weapons facilities and hinted at further military actions. This potential shift in Iran’s nuclear policy, coupled with active military hostilities, has intensified fears of a larger Middle East conflict. While Tehran insists it seeks only energy independence and scientific progress, any withdrawal from the NPT could isolate Iran further on the world stage and disrupt ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain regional stability and nuclear non-proliferation.
