An Indian student, Chinmay Deore, is among four international students at Michigan public universities who have filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, challenging what they allege was an unlawful termination of their student visa status. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, representing the students, stated that their F-1 status was abruptly revoked without valid justification or proper notification.
Deore, 21, is an undergraduate computer science student at Wayne State University and a native of India. He initially came to the U.S. on an H-4 visa in 2004, left in 2008, and returned in 2014 on the same visa type. In May 2022, he lawfully transitioned to F-1 student status. He lives with his family in Canton and expects to graduate in May 2025.
The ACLU emphasized that Deore has no criminal record in the U.S., aside from minor traffic violations. He has not participated in any political protests, according to the complaint filed alongside the emergency injunction request.
