Following the deadly Pahalgam attack, India asks global agencies like the IMF and ADB to review financial support to Pakistan ahead of key funding decisions, in
India plans to urge global financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to reassess the loans and assistance extended to Pakistan, following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists. "We will be asking all multilateral agencies to review the loans and support to Pakistan," a senior government official stated.
The IMF Executive Board is set to meet Pakistani officials on May 9 to conduct the first review of the Extended Fund Facility and consider a new request under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The board will evaluate a proposed $1.3 billion climate resilience loan as well as Pakistan’s ongoing $7 billion bailout programme.
As of December 31, 2024, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has provided Pakistan with 764 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $43.4 billion. ADB’s current active sovereign portfolio includes 53 loans and 3 grants valued at $9.13 billion.
One of ADB’s recent commitments includes a $320 million loan for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rural Roads Development Project, aimed at upgrading nearly 900 kilometers of flood-prone roads. In January 2025, the World Bank approved a $20 billion financial package to help Pakistan address its economic challenges.
