In a decisive response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India has imposed a blanket ban on the direct and indirect import of goods from Pakistan and barred Pakistani-flagged ships from accessing Indian ports. While direct imports from Pakistan have been minimal, several items were entering India through third countries.
A recent Commerce Ministry notification introduced a clause in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) prohibiting the "direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan" with immediate effect, citing national security and public policy concerns. Simultaneously, the Directorate General of Shipping issued an order barring Pakistani vessels from docking at Indian ports, emphasizing protection of Indian cargo, infrastructure, and maritime interests.
India had already closed trade at the Attari-Wagah border—the sole land trading point. In retaliation, Pakistan suspended all trade with India.
Trade volumes had sharply declined since India revoked Pakistan’s MFN status post the 2019 Pulwama attack. Although recent imports from Pakistan amounted to only USD 3 million, mostly agricultural goods, pharmaceutical exports to Pakistan may now be disrupted, forcing Islamabad to explore alternative sources.
