Severe floods in Yunnan destroy homes, bridges, and roads, causing helping travellers and locals; rescue work faces weather conditions.
In recent days, Yunnan province in southwestern China has been smacked by severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, leading to widespread damage. In the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, possibly 27 houses were demolished, and 16 bridges were either seriously damaged or completely washed away. The flooding also caused major disruptions to roads, cutting off access to several towns and villages.
Thankfully, no deaths, injuries, or missing persons have been reported so far. This is especially fortunate since the region is a popular destination for travelers and the flooding occurred around a national holiday, when tourist numbers are usually higher than normal.
In another part of Yunnan the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture landslides and overflowing rivers forced roads to close, making it hard for emergency teams to reach affected areas. Thick fog complicated matters by slowing down relief efforts and making it more difficult for rescuers to see.
The picturesque region of Meri Snow Mountain was one of the most badly affected. It was necessary to relocate about 300 tourists right away, and as a precaution, several hundred residents were also relocated to safe havens.
Authorities have been working round-the-clock to clear dust, reopen blocked routes, and provide required supplies to those displaced. Temporary accommodations, food, and medical aid are being provided to pilgrims.
Weather forecasts suggest further rainfall is expected in the coming days, raising concerns that the situation could worsen. Local officials are urging residents in the most susceptible areas to stay alert and follow safety and caution closely.
Despite the heavy damage caused by the storm, the quick response and maintain evacuation efforts have thankfully prevented any loss of life testament to the region’s preparedness and community care. Rescue teams are still working around the clock, staying alert as Yunnan battles the ongoing impact of this intense weather.
