Hamas and Islamic Jihad express readiness for peace discussions amid the gruesome bloodshed.
Hamas has announced it desires to begin discussions "immediately" on a proposed ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel's relentless offensive continues to claim lives. According to Gaza's civil defence agency, more than 50 people were killed in recent attacks, adding to the staggering toll of a conflict now in its 21st month. The Health Ministry reports at least 57,268 Palestinians dead and 135,625 wounded since the war began, while Israel mourns the 1,139 lives lost in the October 7, 2023, attacks, with over 200 still held captive.
In a significant development, Hamas's ally, Islamic Jihad, has also signalled support for truce negotiations but insists on concrete guarantees that any agreement will lead to a permanent end to hostilities. The statement followed consultations with other Palestinian factions, underscoring the urgency of halting the bloodshed. The timing is critical, coming just before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled visit to Washington, where President Donald Trump is expected to press for an end to the war.
For Gaza's civilians, trapped in a cycle of violence and despair, the possibility of talks offers a fragile hope. Yet, many remain sceptical of past negotiations collapsing and distrust runs deep. The world watches closely, waiting to see if this latest push for peace can finally bring relief to a battered population.
